The Fresno State Bulldogs bid for a third straight WAC tournament championship got off to a great start on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bulldogs blew out Hawaii 83-55 in their quarter-final game this afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, Nevada.

Last year, the Bulldogs defense allowed an average of 51 points a game during the tournament, and that effort continued today, as Hawaii was held to 55 points today while forcing Hawaii to commit 24 turnovers.

"It is a huge part of who we have to be," Fresno State head coach Adrian Wiggins said in a news release. "I don't think you can give up a lot of points and expect to have success. We have to be on our game defensively. Today was good but we have to get better for the next game."

The win improves Fresno State’s record to 26-5 overall, and it is the 22nd straight win for the Bulldogs over a conference opponent, dating back to last year’s conference tournament.

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Jaleesa Ross who scored 15 points including three 3-pointers. Her previous record was 95 3-pointers made last year, and she is currently at 97 3-pointers made this season.

The other Bulldogs to score in double digits today were Hayley Munro with 11 points, and Rosie Moult and Joh-Teena Filipe with 10 points each. Taja Edwards came off the bench to score eight points, to go along with five rebounds and five assists.

"We had a great team effort," Wiggins said. "We had great energy on defense and we shared the ball well on offense along with good enthusiasm to start the game."

With the score tied at 16 with 12 and a half minutes left in the first half, the Bulldogs went on a 33-12 scoring run to lead 49-28 at halftime and never looked back. Their biggest lead of the game was 36 points on three different occasions in the second half.

Fresno State takes the court in Reno again on Friday at noon against the winner of the game currently under way between New Mexico State and Idaho.
